A Sergeant Called Her A Civilian And Told Her To Take Her Mutt And Get Out. He Did Not Know Who Was Standing Behind Him
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
There is a particular kind of quiet that arrives in a room of three hundred soldiers when every one of them realises at the same moment that they have just watched something they were not supposed to see. It does not arrive all at once. It arrives in stages, and the first stage is that the talking stops, and the second stage is that the cutlery stops, and the third stage is that somebody at the back stands up without knowing why. On a Tuesday in September, at eleven minutes past twelve, in a dining facility on a post in the middle of nowhere, a specialist four months out of training told a woman in a grey hoodie to take her mutt and get out, and every single one of those stages happened in under nine seconds.
