He Came Home After Twelve Christmases And Found His Elderly Parents Locked Beneath The House While His Sister Celebrated Upstairs
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Shawn Miller was forty years old and he had not been back to Pinewood Ridge since he was twenty-eight. He ran a logistics company two states away, forty-one trucks and a yard outside Columbus and four thousand eight hundred people on the payroll, and he sent two thousand dollars home on the first of every month without fail. Somewhere in the twelve years between leaving and coming back he had let himself believe that this was the same thing as being a son. On Christmas Eve he drove up to the house unannounced, and his sister opened the door, and inside twenty minutes he had heard a lie he could check, found a sweater that should not have been there, and gone down a staircase he had not used since he was a boy.
