My Deaf Daughter Signed A Warning Across A Ballroom And The Only Man Who Could Read Her Hands Was Holding The Glass
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
My name is Ana Duarte and for two years I carried trays and folded linen in a house where three hundred people could stand in one room and not one of them could hear the most important sentence spoken that night. My daughter Mila was four years old. She was born deaf and she has never once been confused about what she saw. On the last Saturday in October she crossed a ballroom in bare feet, stood behind a man's right elbow, and told him with her hands that his glass had something in it. This is all of it, chapter by chapter, from a warning nobody heard to a cardboard box that arrived two hundred miles north with no name on it.
