A Military Dog Ran Into The Diner Where I Work And Sat Down At My Feet. His Handler Said Only One Person Alive Knew That Signal, And She Had Been Dead For Four Years
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
The Blue Star Diner sits on a county road in a town of nine hundred people, and Rae had worked the counter there for four years without anybody asking her a single question about the four years before that. Then a military working dog came through the door at a dead run with a captain shouting behind him, crossed the room, and sat down against her leg — and the captain went very quiet and said that only one person had ever known that hand signal, and that she had been killed in action on the fourteenth of April, four years ago.
