Claire had worked at Sterling Jewelers for fourteen months. She had never seen a photograph of the man whose name was etched on the brass plate beside the front door.

So when a Black man in a faded jacket and scuffed shoes asked to see a necklace, she looked at the rain drying on his sleeves and told him, “People like you can’t afford anything here.”

He didn’t raise his voice. She did. And when he wouldn’t leave, she grabbed his arm.

Then the manager came running, bent forward so fast his keys swung out, and said: “Mr. Sterling. Welcome back.”

Elijah Sterling owned the company. He had come in alone, carrying a small velvet box: his late wife’s necklace, worn for thirty-eight years, its chain broken near the clasp. He had promised his granddaughter she could wear it at her graduation tomorrow.

He did not ask Claire for an apology. He asked her one quiet question instead. “How many people have heard something like that in this store?”
