She Told Her Friends His Mother Was the Help. Then He Came Home Early and Found Her Alone at the Sink.
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Marcus gave his wife six hundred dollars that morning for a caterer.
He came home at nearly ten to the sound of someone scrubbing a pan, and found his seventy-eight-year-old mother alone at the sink in a stained apron while his wife sat on the sofa with a glass of wine.
Then one of the dinner guests looked at the old woman in the doorway and asked, “You’re Marcus’s mother?”
Because that was not who Vanessa had told them she was.
