She Told His Five-Year-Old Son That Nobody Was Coming For Him. She Did Not Hear The Kitchen Door Open Behind Her
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
The house had been built for photographs. Marble floors, crystal vases, a staircase wide enough for a string quartet to play beside, and rooms arranged so that anyone standing in them could be seen from the right angle. That night it had been full — servers with trays, musicians near the stairs, guests telling the owner he looked exactly like the man they remembered from thirty years of films. By eleven the cars had gone and the flowers had started to wilt and the last glasses sat untouched by the dining room. And in a kitchen at the back of it, under one strip of light, a five-year-old stood on a stool with his sleeves soaked to the elbow, being taught discipline.
