Nobody Could Calm His Baby. The New Maid Picked Him Up And He Went Silent In Four Seconds — And Then She Saw Something On The Child's Neck
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Matteo Varric had not slept in three days and neither had anybody else in that house. His son screamed from dusk until the small hours and no doctor, no nurse and no specialist flown in at his expense had made any difference. Then the maid who had started work that week asked if she could hold him, and the child stopped crying almost at once — and while everyone else in the foyer was still staring at the silence, she was looking at a mark on the baby's neck that she had seen once before, on somebody else, in a photograph attached to a case file that was supposed to be closed.
