The Coin His Mother Gave Him
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Just before midnight, a boy in a jacket two sizes too big walked into a closing diner, set a single worn coin on the counter, and asked for one meal to share with his little sister. The manager told him to get out. A rich old stranger in the corner booth stood up instead — and when the boy looked at his watch and whispered, "Are you Mr. Harrison?", a name buried for eight years came roaring back to life. Some coins are worth more than a meal. Some are worth a whole family — if it isn't already too late.
