A Homeless Man On The Courthouse Steps Called My Police Dog By A Name Nobody Alive Was Supposed To Know. Six Hundred People Watched Rex Walk Away From Me And Go To Him
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Six hundred people were on the courthouse plaza for a memorial service when a homeless man called my dog by a name that was not on any of his paperwork. Rex is the most disciplined animal in our department and he has never once broken a stay. He broke it that morning. He crossed the pavement and put his head against a stranger's chest, and the stranger looked at my captain and said he had a memory card that explained both of them.
