The Shirt She Judged
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
Lauren Pierce poured red wine down the front of Maya’s white shirt, raised her phone, and said “Say cheese!”
She thought she was humiliating the waitress who used to be the poorest girl in their high school.
Seventeen years earlier, hiding Maya’s backpack behind the bleachers had been a joke. So had the thrift-store dress. So had the bleach comment about her mother.
Maya did not throw the wine back. She refilled the water, wished her a good night, and let the elevator doors close.
She did not bother to correct one small assumption.
By Monday morning, Lauren had found out who actually owned the restaurant.
And being embarrassed became the least of her problems.
