They Humiliated His Wife At The Family Dinner Until He Slid The Folder Across
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
My name is Sarah Keane and for four years I sat in the chair nearest the kitchen door at a dinner table I had married into. My father drove a delivery route for thirty-one years. My mother cleaned at the regional hospital until she died. Both of those facts were brought up at that table the way you would bring up weather, at least once a season, by people who had never once asked me a question they actually wanted the answer to. On the fifth year my husband brought a leather case to dinner and rested it against the leg of his chair, and nobody asked what was in it, and I have thought since that this was the most accurate thing that ever happened in that dining room. This is all of it, chapter by chapter, from a seat by a kitchen door to a chair by a window.
