They Told Two Children It Was Six Hundred And Forty Dollars Or The Dog Stayed So I Put My Badge On The Counter
A work of fiction. The characters and events are invented; any resemblance to real people is coincidental.
My name is Eileen Doyle and I am seventy-four years old and for eleven years I was the woman drying bowls behind the counter at the Bellwood County animal shelter. People spoke over me the way you speak over a radio. On a Thursday in March two children came in for a dog they could not pay for, and I heard the manager quote them a number, and I did a thing I had not done in nine years, which was open my mouth. This is all of it, chapter by chapter, from a hundred-dollar bill in a boy's fist to a woman in a hospital ninety miles away with no name on her chart.
