PART 1 OF 10

FIVE SECONDS

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

Emma Carter knew the next five seconds might destroy her life.

She knew it before she moved. She knew it while the crystal chandeliers blazed over three hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest guests, while champagne glasses glittered beneath the ballroom lights, and while a string quartet played something soft enough to make the entire evening feel civilized.

She knew it when Victoria Langford lifted one diamond-covered hand toward the elderly woman in the wheelchair.

And Emma moved anyway.

Her fingers closed around Victoria’s wrist less than a foot from the elderly woman’s face.

The quartet faltered.

A violin note died halfway through.

Then the ballroom fell silent.

Victoria Langford turned slowly toward Emma.

She was beautiful in the expensive, disciplined way magazines loved—blonde hair pinned perfectly, emerald gown fitted without a wrinkle, diamonds shining at her throat. But the look in her eyes made Emma’s stomach tighten.

“Take your hand off me.”

Emma’s pulse hammered.

Behind her, the elderly woman was trembling.

Emma could feel it through the wheelchair.

She released a breath.

“No.”

Several guests gasped.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

Emma’s manager stood near the service entrance, frozen with horror.

Emma could almost see tomorrow unfolding in front of her.

No job.

No paycheck.

Another hospital bill unpaid.

Her father asking why the pharmacy had called again.

Her seventeen-year-old sister Sophie pretending she didn’t care that the deadline for her college deposit was approaching.

Everything Emma had spent two years holding together could disappear because she had refused to look away.

Victoria tried to pull free.

Her bracelet pressed sharply against Emma’s fingers.

“You have no idea what you’ve just done.”

Emma’s voice trembled.

“I’m not going to let you hurt her.”

A low murmur passed through the crowd.

Nobody stepped forward.

That was the part Emma would remember later.

Not Victoria’s anger.

Not the diamonds.

Not even her own fear.

She would remember that hundreds of people had seen what was happening, and almost every one of them had decided that silence was safer.

Then a man’s voice came from behind the crowd.

“Release Miss Carter.”

Everything changed.

The security guards moved first.

Two men near the marble columns immediately stepped aside. Conversations died. Shoulders straightened. People who had looked bored seconds earlier suddenly became attentive.

Emma turned.

A tall man in a black tuxedo walked toward them.

He appeared to be in his early fifties, with dark hair touched by gray and the kind of controlled expression that made shouting unnecessary.

Emma recognized him from photographs.

Vincent Moretti.

Billionaire investor.

Hotel owner.

Philanthropist.

One of those men whose name appeared beneath buildings, hospital wings, scholarships, and occasionally lawsuits involving people wealthy enough to fight him.

Victoria recognized him too.

Her anger vanished.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Vincent did not look at her.

He walked past Victoria.

Past Emma.

Straight to the elderly woman.
