PART 1 OF 15

Not Outsiders

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

The boy was begging for dinner in his own home when the kitchen door opened.

His father stood there in a black suit, staring at the empty place where his son should have been sitting. Then he heard his wife call the child an outsider—and something in his face changed.

The kitchen went silent.

Only seconds earlier, warm yellow light had spilled across marble counters and polished cabinets while three children ate around the enormous table.

Their plates were full.

Rice.

Chicken.

Vegetables.

More food waited in serving dishes between them.

But several feet away stood a little boy with nothing.

He held the bottom of his shirt between nervous fingers, twisting the fabric as he watched the others eat.

His stomach hurt.

Still, he waited.

He had learned that asking too quickly only made things worse.

Finally, he gathered enough courage.

“Is there any rice left for me?”

His stepmother stopped serving.

Slowly, she turned.

The expression she gave him contained none of the warmth she'd shown the children at the table.

“I only cook for my children.”

The boy's fingers tightened around his shirt.

She paused deliberately.

“Not outsiders.”

Nobody moved.

One of the children glanced toward him, then quickly returned to eating.

The boy lowered his eyes.

“But Dad said—”

“Your father isn't here.”

Her voice remained calm.

That somehow made it worse.

She spooned more rice onto her youngest child's plate.

“Go upstairs.”

The boy stared at the food for another second.

His eyes burned, but he refused to cry in front of her.

“Can I have some bread?”

The woman exhaled impatiently.

“What part of no don't you understand?”

His shoulders folded inward.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Heavy.

Fast.

The stepmother froze.

She hadn't expected him home.
