Sold Their Share In 2009
You need three facts before any of the rest of it makes sense.
The first is that my mother, Teresa Vaughn, ran the east wing of the Cole estate for twenty-six years and raised me in the two rooms above the old carriage house.
The second is that in 2009 the Vaughn family's share of that estate was sold to the Ashford foundation. Everybody says so. It was in the county paper. Gerald Ashford has said it at dinners for nineteen years — *they sold up in '09, sad business, drink and debts* — always sadly, always kindly, always where I could hear it.
The third is that I married Adrian Cole four years ago, and the room has never entirely stopped rearranging itself around that fact.
Camille Ashford was Gerald's daughter and she had been raised on the understanding that this estate would be hers by about Christmas. She was thirty-four, she wore red to everything, and in four years she had never once said an unpleasant sentence to me that I could have repeated to anybody.
What she said was: *Nora, you must know this house better than any of us.*
What she said was: *Doesn't she look well? You'd never know.*
I want that on the record, because when it finally happened it did not build. There was no argument. It went from four years of that straight to a woman on marble in eleven minutes.
