The Knock at Christmas
The house was full of laughter.
Christmas music played softly in the background.
The fireplace crackled.
Children ran through the living room while adults carried plates of food toward the dining table.
It was the kind of Christmas everyone dreamed about.
Warm.
Beautiful.
Safe.
Claire stood near the staircase, watching everyone.
She was thirty-four years old and had spent most of her life believing that some chapters were better left closed.
Especially one chapter.
Her mother, Margaret, was sitting beside the Christmas tree.
She smiled as the children played.
Everything seemed normal.
Until someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone became quiet.
Margaret looked toward the entrance.
“Are we expecting someone?”
Nobody answered.
One of the children ran toward the door.
“Wait!”
Claire quickly stopped him.
She didn't know why.
Something about those knocks felt strange.
The front door opened.
Cold winter air entered the house.
And standing outside was a young man holding a large bouquet of red and white roses.
Snow covered his shoulders.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the two little boys screamed with excitement.
“Daddy!”
They ran toward him.
The man dropped the flowers just in time to catch them both.
He laughed.
He hugged them tightly.
Margaret stood up.
Tears filled her eyes.
But Claire…
Claire couldn't move.
Her face became completely white.
Because she knew that man.
She had known him for more than ten years.
And according to everything she had been told…
He was dead.
