The Dog That Wouldn't Move
Alex saw the dog before he understood anything else.
A yellow Lab, standing dead center on the tracks.
Not crossing. Not sniffing. Standing.
"Hey! Off the tracks!" Alex shouted, already out of his cruiser.
The dog didn't flinch.
Its ears were up, its body angled, its eyes locked on something past the rails.
The crossing bells started their slow, rising warning.
Somewhere down the line, a freight train leaned into its horn.
Alex's training handed him a clean, simple label.
Loose animal. Traffic hazard. Move it or lose it.
He waved his arms and shouted a third time.
The Lab turned its head — not toward him.
Toward the far side of the crossing.
And only then did Alex realize the dog wasn't lost at all.
It was guarding something he couldn't see yet.
