PART 1 OF 10

The Judge Who Never Bends

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

For twenty-two years, Judge Margaret Hale had been known by a single sentence.

"The law does not bend."

She had said it to a mother who stole formula for her baby.

She had said it to a boy who ran from a fight that was never his.

She said it the way other people said prayers, quietly and completely, without doubt.

In the courthouse on Ferris Street, the younger clerks passed the same warning to every new hire.

Judge Hale would look at you kindly.

She would listen to every word you had.

And then she would follow the law exactly, no matter whose heart it broke.

She was sixty-three now.

Silver hair pinned back.

Reading glasses she refused to admit she needed.

She arrived before the janitors and left after the lights went dim, because an empty house was harder to sit in than an empty courtroom.

On her desk sat one photograph she never explained.

A boy, maybe nine, gap-toothed, holding a fishing rod too big for him.

Visitors assumed it was a nephew.

No one ever asked twice, because something in her face closed whenever the picture caught the light.

There was one case Margaret Hale had never allowed herself to reopen.

It was not in any file.

It was not in any archive.

It was her own.
