PART 1 OF 12

The Glass On The Table

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

The dining room had been built for twenty people, but Tom only ever needed one chair at the far end and his mother at the other.

Mary sat beneath the brass chandelier in her faded cardigan, trying to cut a piece of roast potato with hands that no longer obeyed her.

The old manor was silent except for the grandfather clock and the soft clink of porcelain.

Her bruised fingers slipped.

The clear glass tipped across the polished mahogany, and water ran toward Tom's silver place setting.

Tom slammed his palm onto the table and stood so quickly that Mary's shoulders folded inward.

For a moment, she looked at the water instead of him.

She had learned that looking at Tom made him believe she was challenging him.

The pressure did not disappear when this moment ended.

Every person in the room carried away a different version of what had happened.

By the time the next decision arrived, the family could no longer rely on silence to protect its oldest secret.
