The Bread and the Iron
The polished ceramic tiles of the newly renovated kitchen were cold against seven-year-old Toby’s knees.
He kept his breathing shallow, his sneakers tucked silently beneath him.
In his small, trembling hands, he held a single slice of white sandwich bread.
Leaning forward against the pristine white baseboard, Toby gently lined the bread up with the metal slats of the floor HVAC intake vent, pushing it down through the iron grille.
"Don't cry," Toby whispered, his voice catching in his throat.
"I brought food."
The silence of the luxury suburban house shattered with the violent strike of wood against tile.
*THWACK.*
Standing in the center of the kitchen was Evelyn.
She was tall, sharp-featured, dressed in a black button-down shirt and dark trousers, gripping a heavy wooden broomstick with both hands.
Her face was contorted into cold, furious authority.
"Stop feeding her!"
Evelyn barked, taking two menacing steps forward.
Before the broom could descend, heavy footsteps thudded from the entryway.
Mark Vance burst into the kitchen, his keys dropping to the counter.
Dressed in a dark gray crewneck sweater and jeans, his face paled the moment he saw his wife raising the wooden handle over their terrified son.
Mark lunged forward, placing his broad frame squarely between Evelyn and Toby, dropping to his knees to pull the shaking boy against his chest.
"What happened here?"
Mark demanded, his voice thick with confusion and rising panic.
Toby looked up at his father.
Tears welled in the boy's brown eyes, spilling over his cheeks as his small chin trembled violently.
He looked at Evelyn’s narrowed eyes, then pointed a shaking finger down toward the floor vent.
"She told me never to tell you..."
Toby sobbed.
Mark’s breath stopped.
He turned his head slowly, looking down at the metal grate near the cabinets.
Through the narrow iron slats, illuminated by the morning sunlight, a pale, emaciated little hand—no larger than a teacup—reached upward, its tiny fingers desperately clawing at the light.
From the dark cavity beneath the floor, a faint, muffled whisper echoed through the metal ducting:
