The Mysterious Call

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

Sarah sat at her desk on a quiet afternoon, staring at the bright phone screen. The caller ID showed an unfamiliar city code that made her pause for a moment. She rarely answered unknown numbers, but

something pressed her to accept the incoming call.

"Hello, this is Sarah speaking."

The line remained silent for several seconds before a deep voice finally spoke up. "You do not know me, Sarah, but I knew your biological father very well."

Sarah froze in her seat as her heart began to beat much faster. Her father had passed away five years ago, leaving everything to her stepmother Brenda.

"Who are you? Why are you calling me about my father?"

"Because Brenda lied to you about his final will and estate planning."

Sarah took a deep breath, trying to stay calm while listening to the man. "My stepmother gave me my share after the funeral ended."

"She gave you peanuts while hiding millions in a secret offshore account."

Sarah held the phone tight against her ear as shock washed over her body. "That is impossible, because the probate court approved the entire inheritance."

"Check the pin number I just texted to your mobile phone right now."

Sarah pulled the phone away from her face and tapped open her messages. A single text message sat on her screen with a four-digit security code.

"What is this pin code supposed to open?"

"It unlocks the digital vault your father created before his sudden death."

Sarah typed the numbers into her laptop screen with trembling fingers. A secure legal document instantly opened up right before her eyes. The words at the top of the page made her breath catch in her

throat. It was a legal trust fund created exclusively in her name years ago.

"How did you get access to these private legal documents?"

"I was your father's corporate lawyer until Brenda fired me after his death."

Sarah stared at the screen as tears began to form in her eyes. "Why wait five years to tell me the truth about this money?"

"Because Brenda is selling the family mansion to a developer later today."

Sarah remembered the sprawling country home where she had spent her happy childhood. Brenda had always claimed the house was heavily mortgaged and completely worthless.

"She told me the bank was going to repossess the entire estate."

"She lied so she could buy it cheap and flip it for massive profit."

Sarah closed her laptop with a sharp click and stood up from her desk. "Where is Brenda right now?"

"She is meeting the buyer at the lawyer's office downtown in twenty minutes."

Sarah grabbed her coat and keys without hesitating for another single second. "I am on my way there right now to stop the sale."

"Be careful, Sarah, because Brenda will do anything to protect her secret."
