PART 1 OF 50

The Twelve-Dollar Exile

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

The sterile scent of the hospital hallway still clung to Claire’s skin as she stood on the sidewalk of St. Vincent’s, clutching a damp five-dollar bill and seven crumpled ones.

Five days prior, she had undergone a major abdominal surgery to bring their son, Noah, into the world.

Her lower body felt like it had been run over by a freight train, and every breath sent a sharp, stabbing reminder through her healing incision.

Yet, her husband, Ethan, had just deemed a city bus ride adequate post-operative care.

" The bus stop is right over there," Ethan had said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth as he adjusted his designer sunglasses.

His mother, Diane, was already tapping her fingernails against the passenger window of Claire’s black SUV—a vehicle Claire’s grandfather had purchased for her graduation.

" Ethan, please," Claire had whispered, her eyes burning with tears she refused to let fall. " I can barely walk, let alone navigate a crowded bus with a newborn in a car seat. "

" Stop being dramatic," Ethan snapped, checking his luxury wristwatch. " Mom has a 1:00 PM reservation at Le Bernardin, and we are not going to be late because you want special treatment.

The twelve dollars is more than enough for a one-way fare.

Just get home, unpack the hospital bags, and have dinner started by six.

Mom wants roasted duck. "

Without another word, he closed the trunk, slammed the passenger door, and peeled away from the curb, leaving a cloud of exhaust fumes right in Claire's face.

Standing there with a five-day-old infant, Claire felt a cold clarity wash over her.

For three years, she had minimized Ethan's cruelty, excused his mother's venomous digs, and hidden her own family background to make him feel like the "man of the house. " Ethan knew she came from an upper-middle-class suburban family, or so he thought.

He had no idea that her father, Thomas Morgan, was a retired four-star Army general whose operational clearance had once spanned continents and whose loyalties were absolute.

When the city bus finally pulled up, a kind elderly woman named Mrs. Gable immediately stood up and surrendered her seat.

As the bus rumbled down Manhattan streets, Claire looked down at Noah’s peaceful sleeping face.

The tiny boy deserved a mother with dignity, not a servant to an ungrateful tyrant.

Claire pulled out her phone and dialed a private, encrypted number that she hadn't used in two years.

" Dad," she said the moment the line connected, her voice trembling slightly. " I need help. "

On the other end, General Thomas Morgan went dead silent for two seconds before his voice dropped into command mode. " Report, Claire. "

She told him everything—from the twelve dollars and the C-section abandonment to the Le Bernardin lunch reservation.

" Do you want to go back, sweetheart? " her father asked gently.

Claire looked at Noah. " No. I want to leave him permanently. "

" Then consider it done," Thomas said. " Look out your next bus stop. "

At the intersection of 57th Street, two matte-black government sedans idled smoothly by the curb.

As the bus doors hissed open, a woman in a sharp charcoal suit stepped out, signaling the bus driver to wait.

She boarded, walked straight to Claire, and gently took the diaper bag.

" Good afternoon, Mrs. Vance," the operative said smoothly. " General Morgan sent us.

Your transport is ready.

Let's get you and young master Noah home. "
