PART 1 OF 9

THE WOMAN IN BLUE

Mavenlus DeskFICTION

The ballroom was filled with music.

Hundreds of guests stood around the enormous white dance floor, watching the bride and groom prepare for the final part of the ceremony.

Everything looked perfect.

The flowers were white.

The tables were covered in crystal glasses.

Golden lights reflected from the chandeliers hanging above them.

And at the center of it all stood Daniel Whitmore.

He was thirty-two years old, successful, handsome, and completely in love.

At least, that's what everyone believed.

His bride, Charlotte, stood beside him in a long white dress.

She smiled at him.

Daniel smiled back.

Then the music stopped.

Not because the ceremony was over.

Because an older woman had suddenly stood up.

She was sitting near the back of the ballroom.

She wore a dark blue dress and carried a small black handbag.

Daniel immediately recognized her.

His mother.

“Mom?”

She didn't answer.

Instead, she stared at the bride.

Charlotte's smile disappeared.

The older woman slowly reached into her handbag.

Her fingers trembled.

She pulled out a phone.

A message had just arrived.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her face turned pale.

Daniel walked toward her.

“Mom, what's wrong?”

She looked at him.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?”

There was silence.

Then a man's voice came through.

“Evelyn.”

The woman froze.

Nobody had called her by that voice in twenty-three years.

“Who is this?”

The man whispered:

“You know exactly who I am.”

Evelyn's hand began to shake.

“Thomas?”

The voice didn't answer.

Instead, it said:

“Don't let your son marry her.”

Evelyn looked toward Charlotte.

Charlotte was watching her.

The older woman's eyes widened.

She suddenly remembered something.

A photograph.

A locked room.

A silver key.

And a promise she had made more than two decades ago.

The caller spoke again.

“She's not who you think she is.”

The call ended.

Evelyn slowly put the phone down.

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom?”

She stared at Charlotte.

Then she stood.

“Stop the wedding.”

The ballroom went silent.

Charlotte's face went completely white.
